Authorship Slots Are Now an Intake Risk
Recent preprint withdrawals tied to alleged research-factory activity show why journals need contributorship checks that examine how a paper was assembled before peer review begins.
A weak manuscript usually announces itself in the text. A weak authorship record is quieter. It may arrive with polished language, a plausible methods section, public data, a familiar corresponding author, and a byline long enough to look collaborative. The problem is not always whether the analysis can be replicated. Sometimes the problem is whether the people listed as authors actually earned the roles the journal is being asked to certify.

The people named in those stories dispute important parts of the account, and journal leaders should be careful not to turn reporting into a verdict. But the operational lesson does not depend on one case. Authorship integrity is becoming an intake problem. If a journal waits until peer review to discover that a paper may have been assembled through slot-swapping, late-stage presenter recruitment, template production, or unclear contribution claims, the journal has already spent editor and reviewer time on a record it cannot yet trust.
The Signal Is How The Paper Was Assembled
Most integrity screening still leans toward the manuscript as an object: similarity score, image check, reference scan, reporting checklist, ethics approval, data availability statement. Those checks matter. They do not answer the assembly question. Who generated the research question? Who chose the dataset? Who ran the analysis? Who wrote the first draft? Who joined after acceptance at a conference or after a fee waiver became useful? Who can respond if a reader challenges the work six months later?
The ICMJE authorship criteria remain a useful anchor because they tie credit to accountability. A paper-mill or research-factory pattern exploits that gap. It does not need to invent every dataset or fabricate every figure. It can trade on open datasets, formulaic designs, junior researchers under publication pressure, conference presentation incentives, fee-waiver routes, and the administrative convenience of a single corresponding author. The result may be a manuscript that looks reviewable while the byline remains unverifiable.
Preprint Withdrawal Changes The Journal Question
Preprints make this harder and more visible at the same time. That permanence is normally a strength. It gives priority, citation stability, and transparency around version history.
For journals, permanence also means a withdrawal should be treated as a workflow signal, not just a reputational stain. A withdrawn preprint does not automatically make a related journal submission invalid. It does mean the intake team should know about it, read the notice, identify which authors overlap, ask whether the submitted manuscript is the same work or a derivative version, and decide what evidence is needed before assigning reviewers.
The wrong response is a private blacklist based on names, countries, or career stage. The right response is a documented question path. Journals need a way to distinguish a corrected honest preprint, a disputed withdrawal, an authorship dispute, a plagiarism issue, a content error, and a broader concern about organized misconduct. Those are not the same editorial facts.
What Intake Should Ask Before Peer Review
A useful authorship screen is short enough to run before peer review and specific enough to create evidence. It should not become a twenty-page interrogation of every multi-author paper. It should activate when ordinary signals line up: unusually rapid output by a corresponding author, many papers using the same public dataset template, late author additions, conference-presenter swaps, inconsistent affiliations or degrees, withdrawn preprint history, or contribution statements that do not match the work described.
- Ask each author to confirm the submitted version, not only the general project.
- Require contribution statements that name concrete tasks: study design, data extraction, analysis code, statistical review, drafting, revision, supervision, data verification, and submission management.
- Flag authors added after submission, after conference acceptance, or after peer review starts, and require a dated explanation approved by all authors.
- Check whether the work has a preprint, withdrawn preprint, conference abstract, registered protocol, or related manuscript with overlapping authors.
- When public datasets are used, ask who selected the cohort, wrote or checked the code, interpreted the result, and can provide files if queried.
- Send major editorial correspondence to all listed authors when authorship integrity is in question, instead of relying only on the corresponding author.
None of these questions proves misconduct. That is the point. Intake is not a trial. It is a triage step that decides whether the manuscript is ready for scientific review, needs clarification, should be paused for an institutional authorship check, or should be declined because the authors cannot establish basic responsibility for the record.
Do Not Confuse Equity With Leniency
The hardest part of this problem is that publication pressure is not evenly distributed. Medical students, early-career researchers, and scholars in under-resourced settings may face real incentives to accumulate abstracts and papers quickly. Journals should not respond by treating those groups as suspect. They should respond by making contribution expectations legible before submission and by applying the same evidence standard to every author group.
Equity does not mean accepting vague authorship because the local incentive system is harsh. It means giving honest contributors a clear route to show what they did, making space for legitimate multi-site and student-led collaboration, and refusing to let organized authorship markets crowd out researchers who are doing slower, accountable work. A journal that ignores slot-based authorship is not being inclusive. It is letting the strongest operators exploit the weakest incentives.
Make The Byline Inspectable
Journal managers do not need to become detectives in every case. They need an inspectable byline process. That means contribution fields that can be reviewed by editors, author confirmations that are timestamped, preprint and conference links captured at submission, author-change requests preserved with approvals, and escalation rules that tell staff when to pause a manuscript before reviewers are invited.
This also protects reviewers. Peer reviewers are asked to evaluate methods, interpretation, novelty, and fit. They should not be the first line of defense for whether a fifth author was added because they could attend a conference or whether a corresponding author assembled a study through a messaging group. If the journal has visible warning signs before review, it should resolve the authorship record before asking volunteers to donate expertise.
There is a metadata dimension as well. Contributor roles, ORCID iDs, affiliations, prior preprints, protocol links, and author order changes are not decorative fields. They are part of the evidence that helps editors, institutions, indexers, and readers understand who stands behind the work. Weak contribution data creates a soft landing for bad actors because it leaves too much to narrative after a concern arises.
Practical Takeaway For Journal Leaders
Add an authorship-risk gate before peer review. Keep it narrow: run it only when preprint history, output patterns, author changes, public-dataset templates, affiliation inconsistencies, or contribution gaps create a reason to ask more. For flagged manuscripts, require version-specific author confirmation, concrete contribution statements, preprint and conference disclosure, and all-author visibility on integrity correspondence.
The goal is not to slow every paper. The goal is to keep peer review focused on manuscripts whose bylines can withstand basic inspection. As authorship becomes easier to package, trade, and present as collaboration, journals need to verify the human accountability behind the record before they certify the science in front of it.
